MOST IMPORTANT!

******************

1.

2.

Choose products from companies that are leaders in supporting the environment through sustainable business practices.

Engage your team - it's not just about saving money!

Saving Energy

Recently insulated three large areas of the premises (part of older building).
An external laundry handles the bulk of our laundry, but we process 3-4 loads per day and have installed two clotheselines to optimise use of sunlight to dry items. Staff are aware they must only use dryer when absolutely necessary.
Low energy bulbs are installed where feasible.
Staff are encouraged to use heating/cooling wisely and switch off when not in use. This also applies to equipment and lights.
Our hot water supply is limited to the minimum heat.
Both washing machines and fridges were chosen for their high energy rating.

Saving Water

Water used in our foot soak treatments are stored in a small tank then recycled onto the courtyard garden
A 'Thermal M' steam and vichy cocoon was chosen for our wet treatment room over three years ago because of its water conservation capability. With water in mind we made a deliberate business decision not to install spa baths as their water usage is extremely high for only 20 minutes worth of treatment.
Dishes and equipment are washed by hand.
Both toilets are dual flush.
Reducing waste
We pay privately for a paper/box/cardboard recycling service as being a commercial premises, the council only provide rubbish removal, not recycling bins.
Disposables aren't in use, cups and glasses are the norm.
Reusing Resources

We use recycled printing paper.
Our professional use product containers (glass, plastic) are rinsed and stored, and once a week taken home to utilise curbside recycling service as the council doesn't provide this for the business premises.
Policies & Programs

Our policy manual strongly encourages staff to recycle and conserve wherever possible.
Many of our staff are between 20-30 years of age and require constant reminders about water and power usage. One staff member, however, showed great initiative in supplying a tank to store recycled water for the garden, which was much appreciated!
During staff meetings we frequently discuss how to find the balance between meeting client needs (in terms of comfort/heating/cooling) and being energy wise. We also discuss the greenhouse gas figure quoted on our energy bills at staff meetings.
Winter 2007 we plan to build a challenge into savings on heating bills by either donating to staff charity of choice any savings they make or a staff incentive.
Aveda was an important choice for the business as their environmental philosophy and action towards recycling and harvesting sustainable ingredients is, we believe, second to none in an industry that has traditionally put beauty and profits before wellbeing and a sustainable environment.
