Being aware of the environmental impact the business has helped me to make choices I otherwise wouldn't have considered.

Water recycling systems are worthwhile to install.

Starting with small actions makes a difference for the 'big picture' of creating a sustainable way of living.

Saving Energy

I have become very aware of energy useage and never leave any appliance on overnight, even on standby.
Created a smaller space within the large work area (see photo) so it could be efficiently heated and cooled when I don't need the whole space.
Workspace designed to be as warm in winter and cool in summer as possible - carpet, insulation, opening windows for natural ventialtion.
Walls painted white for a brighter space - don't need to turn on the light as often as I used to.
Roof vents and windows are used for cross ventilation.
Verandahs and north facing windows are positioned to catch light in winter and keep out heat in summer.
Purchased a variety of kilns for glass work so only use as much energy as is required for the job - no waste by using a big kiln for small jobs.
Upgraded fridge to much more efficient model.
Plan to replace all globes with low energy equivalents as they blow.

Saving Water

Greywater system installed to water native gardens around studio. This has made the whole shed and surrounding native garden area very pleasant, and good for morale!
Rainwater tanks installed and used.
Reducing waste

Old carpets outside doors mean less dirt travels inside and cleaning is cut down.
Separate bins for recyclable materials.
Use cups, glasses and plates, never disposable ones.
Always looking for alternative processes that will reduce waste.
Use 'green' cleaning products wherever possible
Reusing Resources

Reuse waste paper for notes.
No disposable kitchen items (cups, plates and cutlery).
Glass scraps are sorted and used again wherever possible.
Scrap lead is given to a plumber to reuse.
Prefer to work with close local businesses so travel is minimal.
Share resources with other local artists and businesses, particluarly at Lot 19.
