The National Hotel/Motel Complex: Pub with more cheer
The National Hotel/Motel complex in Bendigo includes a popular and very busy restaurant, main bar and an accommodation facility with 25 rooms and a staff of 30.
Recognising the opportunity to learn more about saving energy and realising this also meant saving money, proprietors Bruce Morcom and Budge Russell took part in the Energy Efficiency in Industry Program with a view to wanting to do more for the environment.
“We quickly learned that we could be far more efficient in what we do without energy usage, and that there were considerable benefits for both our business and the environment in doing so,” hotelier Bruce Morcom said.
Putting to good use knowledge gained from taking part in the program, light gloves throughout the complex have been changed from inefficient high energy users to more energy efficient ones, water wasting shower heads have been replaced with more efficient ones, and staff and customers are made aware of the management’s efforts to drive down energy consumption and therefore energy costs.
“You just have to be wary, both with what you do, and with the appliances that you buy,” Mr Morcom said.
The National’s customers have noticed and made comment on the proprietors’ conscious effort to reduce their energy bill, a result due in part to the business’ participation in the EEIP. Feedback forms provided for motel guests have provided many positive comments and support for efforts to make the venue more environmentally friendly.
“I like to try and look after the environment… it’s not just about the bottom line, it’s also about providing a service,” Mr Morcom said.
